Head Back to School With the Right Backpack

It's the number one student accessory, and they'll take it with them pretty much everywhere they go.  In other words, picking the right backpack is important for your student.  From fashion to safety issues, let's take a look at what's out there, and how to make the right choice.

The Backpack is a Fashion Choice

As much as a parent would like to simply choose the most practical, functional, and hopefully inexpensive backpack out there, this may not always be possible.  Remember that for students the backpack is a form of expression, and the statement that they make with it is important to them.  Try to find the middle ground--something that looks good but can also handle the rigors of daily schoolyard usage.  Your child will thank you for your flexibility in this regard.

The Backpack Needs to Do Its Job

Functionality is also important here.  Depending on your child's age and grade in school, the ideal backpack can take on several forms.  For the grade-schooler, something fairly light will probably do the trick.  For the high-schooler, something a little more durable and supportive is probably in order.

Common Backpack Guidelines

Young kids:
  • Lightweight
  • 2 adjustable padded straps
  • Size - no taller than waist to shoulders, no wider than the child's trunk
Junior High to College Age:
  • Solid back padding
  • A waist belt to help distribute the weight
