Help Your Child to Reach Their Goals

If you haven’t had the opportunity to speak with your child about their goals and the progress they are making towards them, now is a perfect time. The Tutoring Center, Herndon has the following post to offer which can help you to make this conversation a productive and supportive one.

Learn About Their Goals and Progress

The first step is to learn about what their goals are and how they are progressing. If you are like many parents then there is a good chance that your child hasn’t shared them with you before. Once you know them, check how they are going with them. During this time, it’s imperative that your student feels comfortable enough to tell you whether they are or aren’t on track, as there is a chance that they aren’t. If your child is falling behind, be sure to show encouragement for the work they have done so far and offer your support.
  • If your student is falling behind with their progress, something as simple as rearranging their schedule to find additional time or providing them with a small amount of additional homework help can be all that’s needed to get them back on track.
  • However, if it just isn’t reasonable for them to make up for lost time, consider adjusting their goals so that they are smaller and achievable.
It’s never ideal to reduce a goal, however, it is better your student spends their school and study time working towards something they can achieve instead of simply giving up and spending their valuable time doing nothing.

Can They Take on More Goals?

If your child is at the other end of the scale and they are not only on track but have additional time, consider adding smaller complementary goals. For example, if your child wants to read a set number of books by the end of the school year, consider adding a few more to the list, such as a secondary book to a series which they have been reading. These smaller goals can help them to make the most of their learning time.
